i went looking for the original cestui que vie act in the british library, because it was right next to the train station. it took the heads of archives, manuscripts, social sciences, humanities and catalogues to find it for me. it was repealed in the 1800s but no sign of that there, no longer in print! the two books they found were proposals to the house of commons in a 1666 journal and the act itself which is called something completely different.

 

i searched on and noticed birth registration came in a lot earlier and so i'm still looking for the connection there. What a beautiful majestic place but, yes, you're not allowed to borrow a book just allowed to read it there! we mustn't let a purely digital landscape, with 'truths' delivered to our devices by a technology full of conflict of interests. I'm all for writing our own laws to replace the ones that hold the exploitative systems in place.
