Harmony Hall's Hero (of the week - possibly decade)

https://climatenewsnetwork.net/water-man-of-india-makes-rivers-flow-again/

Celebrating Rajendra Singh

Our water hero is from India who planned to bring education to poor communities. As he traveled he was told that it was water that was needed. He devised a way using very small, mud dams, constructed with the people and any debris they could find. Trial and perseverance paid off when after 360 of these little waterways were built (picture a pin ball machine!) they managed to direct the one deluge (which is all some areas get each year_, back into the aquifers.

Mile-wide river beds that had been dry for more than 60 years were returned to a perennial flow and of course the fertility of the banks and land around was restored too. His claim is: As long as we find water in our eyes at the suffering of another, we will be able to solve the water problems of the planet. Also at Harmony Hall, we believe that there is power in compassion and that we just have to care to be effective in our climate actions.

Maybe we don't need education now as much as we need credit, to do the things that need to be done. People can't make changes if they're worrying about survival, we have to get as far back up the Maslov's pyramid of needs as possible. So, although we are educators and farmers and pioneers...what we need are are community banks. Full banks, with the fractional reserve mechanism, with a conservation lending criteria, where earnings, profits and produce sticking around - not flying off to be stashed in an off-shore bank account or sold on a dodgy market.

Spare a thought for the passengers on the Sarah, too. 2000 young bulls sailed to Libya to be slaughtered. The last lot were at sea for 3 months as no one would let them land. The few still alive were shot in the port. None of my heroes or guides would condone that, would yours?

Four Seasons Harvest at Harmony Hall

Just get things in the ground. Give them a chance to grow if they want to. Keep talking to the soil. Never relent and use pesticides or cut things down, if they're apparently in the way. Work with nature. There's room for everyone and everything. That is my philosophy

Beetroot, roots very sweet, leaves still tender.

Same with the chard - huge big leaves in the fullest of health (and notice the pesky avocado coming up behind!!! I must have about 40 avocado trees now!!!

Daffodils I planted 15 years ago when my friend Adrian Feasey died. It was he who restored the church windows when I built Harmony Hall originally. I have been helped by so many people and lost many friends in this short span of time. As James Joyce said 'They lived and laughed and loved and left'.

In early December, I was suddenly aware that I hadn't planted any spring flowers, winter beans, garlic or onions. I'd missed the moment...Or so I thought. I planted a bulb of garlic - so about 13 cloves - straight from the supermarket. And now a few short months later, here they are coming on strong.

That's the house and the stable angled to perfection behind it! I don't know if you ever saw the video of me measuring out the exact orientation and several of us leaning against it as it hung aloft on chains, from the digger, trying to put it down in the right place!!

This is ALL the hazelnuts that germinated ( I stratified 150 and planted them all beautifully) but still, there's about 13 and they will be a nut orchard one day (watch this space....but don't hold your breath)

My 'hugel kulture' bed (which is like a lasagne bed, where you make many layers of twigs and hay and manure and soil) didn't really work yet as I think the roots of my trees were exposed to a chill under the layers.

But the gutters (as seed trays) are now full of the seeds sent to me, saved and those precious many-generational seeds that I got from the Natural Agriculture course!

I had to send this close up of some of the kale as most people's kale is a heavy stalk by now, like a brussels sprout stem with some good tough leaves off it...mine is still tender spring leaves and brilliantly thriving - some of the plants,  I've only just replanted from the gutters and they get a new lease of life then and don't seem to realise it's mid winter!

This is my one indoor rustic bed where I harvested the 20 carrot from this week but it perennially hosts the Kumquat tree and a couple more avocado trees. The ex-scaffolding plank was Mark Stewart's RIP as were the sawn off scaffolding pipes that hold up the free standing polytunnel outside. This avocado gallery is also a poly tunnel but I attached it to the house - no more building and flipping blowing away again for me! Anyway, for those worried about soil against their house, I used polycarbonate left over from the roof to line the back of the beds so no dampness transfers.

You might remember the little trellis beds I bought from a catalogue - they looked ginormous on the page and were supposed to pig-proof some espaliered Victoria Plum trees. When they arrived it was obvious that they would actually fit on a windowsill and made of the flimsiest wood imaginable! Anyway, my two orange trees are thriving there (it's in the avocado gallery...which allows me to sometimes refer to it as the 'orangerie'   which is entertaining and certainly not out of place in the context of a house so ostentatiously named!!! Anyway, there are 4 avocado trees, no less, crammed in around the orange trees so i might have to work out what to do about them!!

The yin yang beds i built. I took in a bit of floor in this photo so you could enjoy the paving i did last year. That prostrate tree at the front is an olive and there's an upward surging one behind it!

I was just tidying up a bed in the tunnel and found ten potatoes and no doubt there'll be ten more when I go further!

Rocket

Sage, Parsley and flat leaf parsley

The key to success is leaving the seedlings in the gutter seed trays all summer to produce 'spring greens' of the kale and beetroot variety. Then to plant them out (as far as the tunnel) in autumn. They love the new space to play with and go again on the growing front.

I couldn't believe the polytunnel that has really lots and lots of things to eat. I somehow have achieved that 'four seasons harvest' I intended to, even though I don't know how!

This is the willow, I am weaving - 10 to 30 whips a day maximum, so a good 10,000 to go! But it is a lovely process, unlike the loppers and secateurs frenzy of most years!

My 3rd olive tree - which doubled as a Christmas tree this year. It had so many lights on it, the need for water got overlooked but it is now recovering its dignity slowly.

Yin Yang bed is heaving with the most mature avocado trees and as some of them are 11 and 12 years old, this year they may flower and bear fruit. Leading supplier in Ireland, I'm sure!

Self-seeded young leeks, totally delicious and I won't make last year's mistake of aiming for shop-bought-size. When I did, they went to seed and flowered. I like there to be something flowering in the polytunnel and avocado gallery at any one time, for the bees. The leek and carrot flowers were epic but the cabbage and rocket flowers just keep coming and don't take up quite so much space!

High Court Ruling Ireland's Insurance For Lost Earnings

My icing on the cake insight today, is that insurance companies will only honour a policy and pay a claim, if they themselves can claim and cover the cost of it from another insurance company. This bodes ill for their unregulated and unethical customer service and response to insured companies, facing a significant loss of earnings due to government-imposed restrictions.

I shared recently my excitement that a UK court had ruled that insurance companies had to honour claims for loss of earning. Obviously there’s no reason why not as presumably that is why they are insured for this sort of disastrous eventuality. Surely not every claim can be refused as insurance fraud or through finding an exemption in the small print.  Unfortunately our Paschal Donoghoe says he can only ask that insurance companies be fair, in each individual case.  Imagine how helpful it would have been, if he had made a statement that the government expected insurance companies to pay? Only one or two companies have enough money to bring the insurance companies to court and we can only hope and pray for a decision that ripples into law as a precedent that of course companies are covered. Come on insurance companies, just because you’re a financial services, doesn’t mean your industry is all profit. You are offering a service as well. Well, supposed to be.

I wrote to the Green Party when the court ruling in the UK happened and asked whether Ireland would follow suit. Kindly, Kilkenny’s great TD Malcolm Noonan’s office  sent me the Minister of Finance’s response.

“Frances, the most up to the date comments from the Minister for Finance about business disruption insurance – delivered just a few days ago on 28/01/21 – can be found here: Covid-19 Pandemic Supports – Thursday, 28 Jan 2021 – Parliamentary Questions (33rd Dáil) – Houses of the Oireachtas

“… we have both had a number of engagements with the insurance industry on this issue, and have made it very clear that insurers should not attempt to reject claims on the basis of interpreting policies to their own advantage. They should engage with those impacted businesses honestly, fairly and professionally to honour those elements of the policies covered, in line with the CBI’s Consumer Protection Code. “

Basically he is saying that he has asked insurers to be fair and honest and not interpret contracts to their own advantage.

!!!!!!! Don’t laugh….or you will cry.

Let’s consider ‘insurance’ for a moment.

Cost

Companies have arbitrarily put up the cost of insurance, year on year, in the last ten years doubling it at least. My car insurance is a great example. I have a ‘no claims bonus’ since I was 19 (30 years) I have no points on my license and not even a parking ticket history. My insurance was €300 maximum and then suddenly it was €800, but if I argued the toss, the company would agree to bring it down to €725. But then they would put it back up to €800 if I needed to pay it monthly.

The best cars to insure

Is insurance cheap if the car is old, nearly a classic , well maintained and a totally reliable Japanese model with solid bodywork? You might have thought so as it is not worth that much and would not necessitate a big payout if it was written off. No, because an old car is considered to be ‘more likely to be in an accident’. This is nonsense of course as the cars would not be still on the road ….with drivers with lifetime-long no claims bonuses… if they were any sort of liability.

Is insurance cheap if the car is new and regularly upgraded? No, because it is ‘more valuable and would cost more to replace’.

God forbid, you move into a city for a couple of years and do not need car insurance for a time. My great friend with a clean license and no claims for 25 years was quoted €2,300 to get a car on the road…well the insurance bit.

Paying out

Quite apart from ‘excess’ – which is when the insured party has had to agree they pay the first 600 or 6000 of a claim depending on its size (regardless of the many years insurance has been continually paid and provided)

AND the multitude of caveats when it comes to making a claim that make it a purely prohibitive exercise; such as making future insurance far more expensive.

The icing on the cake was when I decided to make a claim and was told that they would only honour the claim if there was a third party involved. I asked if they were saying that they would only ever pay insurance if there was another party’s insurance company they could charge the payment costs on to? He said yes.

This is obviously a problem for businesses now as the minister says they are on their own in negotiating with their insurers. There is no 3rd party and no government stance in their favour.

In fact, the minister is only talking to the banks and the insurance companies. – only talking to the financial services, who pay no tax (remember the MEP on hunger strike, so determined was he that asking a miniscule tax on financial transactions could and might be the only way to save our economies. At present they make no contribution.  But still, the minister doesn’t talk to the producers and services and tax paying businesses.

Maybe he thinks they are part of the populist masses now. He has made many speeches on populism. Not one, though, I notice challenging the systemic Capitalist assault on all life for profit (Switzer).

I’d love to be a fly on the wall when Donohoe gets to the pearly gates and Peter asks why did you block every chance the Irish people and then later the European people had of making a living or sustaining themselves? Who exactly did you sell your soul too or was it just franticly superior role ego and ignorance that you clung to all your adult life?

Anyway, all businesses can do is hope the two companies win that took their insurance companies to court for refusing their claims. That would set a precedent. But don’t let anyone forget that the government prop up the insurance companies too, so the courts won’t want to go against that little relationship either. Remember when Shell were repeatedly contaminating the water but still our EPA wanted to grant them the license to drill for gas? What did the government do? They paid 100million to AXA to insure Shell against damage. Yes, I know, when Shell trashes Ireland’s environment, an Irish company must pay out, from a policy that the Irish government paid for in the first place. No accountability anywhere.

Except, if we all start writing to the papers and to Minister Fleming (who is also mentioned in the article and might have more integrity) you could argue that the government does have the power to insist that insurance companies fill the black void in Ireland’s economics, just as the UK are insisting they should over there.

Ireland was humiliated by the church for long enough, the minister for finance will not make us slaves to his Central Bank pals for the next generation. We will insist he lets us have the public banks we need.

Look at what the Indian farmers are doing – protesting new laws that say hybrid gmo seeds and chemical fertilizers and pesticides must be used. Look at the 4 new public banks in the US – devised to provide credit to whole areas – businesses, food and services and independent of private banks and their debt-based credit, inflated mortgage rates and crippling, totally unnecessary, interest. The only reason Ireland didn’t get it’s public banks in 2015, 16, 17, 18, 19 or 20 is because Minister Donohoe is blocking their legislation. It is a direct sabotage of the whole country’s and next generation’s future. I know karma catches up with everyone but one still hopes and prays that the greedy insurance companies, banks and individual public servants (!!!!??? Sounds old-fashioned I know but I had to remind people that that is what the government is supposed to be comprised of) wake up before they die. Wake up in what way? To the fact, they are backing the wrong horse. Flogging the dead horse in fact and their own offspring are going to suffer.

I used to half laugh at Kim Jung Un as he posed smiling gleefully on a nuclear submarine, astride a missile. I thought to myself what sort of plonker tests nuclear weapons on their own shore. Then our very own Simon Coveney got caught up in the meglamania as well and we saw the front cover with his quote ‘I want to make Ireland the nuclear weapons testing ground of Europe’    Holy Moses, these psychos have insidiously taken over the asylum. We have no idea what they have been rolling out while the population has been confined to their houses. But one thing is sure, there is not one shred of protecting human life going on.

The Seaweed Swindle Catastrophe of CETA: The Canadians could Sue & Bankrupt Ireland in 6 Months

Green Party Asked Members for their questions about CETA, this is mine:

CETA is an agreement with Canada

Canada's main interest in Ireland is our Seaweed Resources.

How can it not a catastrophe to ratify the CETA deal when

1) the Government has already significantly contravened the trade agreement.

a) by selling resources, mechanical harvesting rights and licenses and even ownership of some of Ireland's coastline to Canadian Corporations.

b) The Canadians are now looking to start harvesting

c) The government promised (and sold) resources  to the Canadian companies that belong to Irish seaweed harvesters.

d) Since the previous government sold the resources, the Oireachtas Committee Committed to Protecting the Rights of Traditional Seaweed Harvesting License Holders.

e) Mechanical harvesting was tried and had to be stopped within days as it was so destructive to the marine environment.

f) Secretly, some mechanical harvesting has been started elsewhere.

g) The government intends to shaft the Irish Seaweed Industry: It wants to plus it will be required to, by CETA, to honour the agreement with the Canadian buyers.

h) This is evidenced by the National Seaweed Mapping Project at which thousands of pounds has thrown. I have in writing that the government does not want the traditional seaweed harvesters even approached about mapping the seaweed they are responsible for - they should of course be the 'ground truthers' with whom the drone footage should be compared to the species and quantities people actually measure/assess on the ground. They do not want those previously licensed stretches on the coast, on that map. They do not even want the map on open sourced software, it has to be private, secure and commercially designed (the tender proposal by Marine institute and Small Innovation wrote). Only the purchasers will know what is where and no mention/protection of individual inherited rights. I know this as I applied to map the seaweed using open sourced software provided by the National Biodiversity Data Centre and recruiting the 6,500 seaweed harvesters as the ground-truthers.

i) No mention/protection of how much is harvested and therefore like the fisheries the foreign interests will not pay a tax, or generate any sort of income for Ireland or work.

j) With private maps created only by drone footage, there will be no oversight of environmental impact.

k) If the government try and say sorry, you can't after all mechanically harvest or have access to that stretch of coast or ask for a tax that was not going to be charged to start with - all these things will 'affect the corporations' profits' and they can sue our government.

l) Plus you've rendered the only resource Ireland has left to foreign management and will need to support Ireland's coastal dwellers.

m) If instead the government got the existing licenses and licensed areas on the map now, they could get the incoming purchasers or themselves to pay a handsome redundancy/pension for their ongoing lost earnings. We  could also train them up as stewards of the resource and coastal environment - I have already written a Fetac Level 5 Climate Action Leadership course to qualify our traditional seaweed harvesting license holders For all my climate action leadership training courses, see my website www.green-business-consultancy.ie

n) Beween 50 and 80% of our oxygen comes from the sea and we already have just given licenses for one 800 hectares of shell fish farming - where there is already a problem with toxicity.

o) The traditional seaweed harvesters must be left in control of their stretch, making an income from what is taken and also (like forestry) receive grants to put in and manage mobile carbon sump seaweed forests.

p) Ireland will be instantly sued and bankrupted if they take any stance for people or environment.

How is that not a disaster?

Ireland's NLM - No Lives Matter Movement

Black Lives Matter in the States but No Lives Matter in Ireland.

Inpunity and Desperation

Before we accept increased Garda powers and fines as ‘necessary’, please consider that only three demographics of people are moving around despite the restrictions. 1) The very rich and 2) their enslaved workers travel. Both go wherever they will or daily grind, respectively, as before. Both groups 1 & 2 move around the country and travel on air and ferry with impunity – They may be a Mr Quealy to his pig slaughterhouse or a Joe Blogs to fill shelves in a supermarket. Equally granted safe passage are terrified student nurses to volunteer and equally demoralised more experienced doctors and nurses to work on  Covid wards. Oh yes, and farmers – although no one has explained why that is but I carry my Farmer’s Identification with me so that I can go somewhere if I need to. Which brings me to the third group the gardai are stopping. 3) the very desperate with no other choice.

There is no fourth group – some sort of wild minority of people who do not believe in the pandemic, who do not respect the law, who are not trying to protect the lives of their families, the lives of frontline workers and protect against the spread of the virus. Think about it, there is no one getting up in the morning thinking Sod it, I’m going out. The only people who are going to get fined are the people who HAVE TO go somewhere to do something or at worst are just getting out of their domestic situations and have no intention of leaving their cars.

It was only recently, when I saw this video, that I realized how tragically desperate people already are. Around the world, people like us were all living ‘hand to mouth’, ‘month to month’ even before the pandemic. Within one month of lock downs, people were defaulting on their house payments, be they mortgage or rents or business leases. Small businesses made up over 90% of Irish employment and Income tax for the country for that matter. Nonetheless, straight away we were all shut down, leaving only the corporations and banks to monopolize all industries including food and health. And most importantly a monopoly on our countries’ economic policy – eg tax breaks-arama to increase their profits and also commanding a cut of the recovery monies too. And still the Department of Finance won't give us our public banks - such sadists and gimps to the private bankers.

What I saw on the video were protests happening all over the world, since last summer, Ireland included and none of them reported in the national media in Ireland or the UK. Their cry was unanimous: Don’t shut down livelihoods and everyone’s ability to survive on the strength of faulty PCR testing, heralded as a golden standard but actually 30% false positives. And inherently flawed calculation of all deaths, as caused by Covid.

The policing response in each area has also been unanimous: Heavy handed, violent, armed, dressed in riot protective gear arriving to ‘clear’ the initially peaceful demonstrations. After 6 weeks of protests in Spain, the police took off their helmets and joined the people, marching in solidarity. A metropolitan policeman (UK) was interviewed saying that just because your line of command tells you to go beyond your remit to keep the peace and use force and make arrests it doesn’t give officers a right or reason to do so. He cited the Nuremburg trials where Nazi officers said they were told to commit atrocities and that was not sufficient for them to be freed of accountability.

Mainstream Reporting Devoid of Logic & Conscience

I write this down as governments, media and tech companies are spreading a narrative devoid of logic and conscience. I want to share another understanding of what is happening with the intention of people resisting the punitive divisions and outrage people are being encouraged to aim at each other. No one deserves a fine because if we think for a moment, or ask anyone who is driving, why they are driving, they will give a perfectly valid reason and will be taking every possible care to be stay safe and keep others safe.

There is one caveat to No Lives Matter in Ireland. If you are visible and have public support, you matter. But no one is visible now and no one has public support or even community support. We are all in our unnaturally separate experiences and we could all die for all they care. They are keeping an eye though, but be sure it is not for the ‘public good’.

How New Racist Feeling is Being Generated every day.

There is a lot of coverage about Black Lives Matter and how Trump promoted racism but today I put two and two together and realized that for the Irish and UK government, no lives matter.  I think that’s a lot more serious and that Trump may be a caricature and distraction. In the UK today I heard that there is fear of the vaccine.  One headline says ‘there’s no pork or meat in the vaccine but fears persist’. Well that could be the fear of Bell’s Palsy, the paralysis, the loss of use of limbs and strength, the fevers, the chills and the allergic reactions including death. A lot of the people who are not taking up the vaccine are Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME).

Some of my muses for social change; Becky, Legend and Angel

Government Raises Public Support For Forcing Vaccine

Instead of sticking to the plan that the country needs a 75% uptake and resting assured that 75% want it and are waiting for their turn, a minister today said that there should be a concerted push to get the vaccine into the BAME demographic. They don’t want it. So why not find your 75% with the others? Answer? Well, they’ve spread another story too. That many of our nurses are from those backgrounds and nobody wants to be treated by someone who might get Covid! They have managed to create a Covid fear and further community and race division around the uptake of the vaccine. Meanwhile 23 die in Norway after the Pfizer one and thousands react in California so they had to ‘pause’ the roll out. Pfizer say ‘they are not alarmed by the numbers.’

Big Tech Breeding Racism

Telecommunications Companies Receive All the Funding & Collect Our Data & Manage The Information & Access We Have

Ireland is no better and here they use technology companies to spread loathing. When you need help or a refund or to deal with any of their horrendous service from your telecommunications company, you are met with waiting on hold, there being no email contact, to not helping, to not being able to authorize a refund or a cancellation or resolution of any sort…that is their first line of defence: the Indian customer care centres. When you have nearly decided to top yourself and/or get out of your contract once and for all, you are at last transferred to another centre, where they are all Irish, sound, relaxed, capable, apologetic and able to resolve the problem as they speak to you. This is intentional. You come away (even I came away) beyond irritated with the foreign correspondence and relieved at the local solution.

What has been allowed while we were restricted

And then they let you down with your connection repeatedly just before the text comes through saying that 5G is available in your area. Your local TD says that WHO says the technology is ‘safe’ and that no studies will be one in Ireland on people, biodiversity or environment and no peer reviewed studies from elsewhere will be looked at either. I rang my phone provider 6 months ago to ask about 5G. She said, 'oh yes, all the companies have been told to roll it out when they’re ready….no regulation whatsoever…. And they were hoping it was going to be 2020 but because of the restrictions instead it would be 2021'.

Military Security Level Surveillance under the heading 'broadband update'

As it was, they did get it in by October 2020. Think about that too, if you will: The new technology needs new infrastructure that no one witnessed going in, although we all saw a huge amount of trees being cut down in the summer apropos of nothing. This is the sight line that 5G masts need, So much has happened while we’ve been locked in our houses, it really is sinister and worthy of your time and research – while you can still find out more on the internet.

I share this video while I can. But probably even more importantly, I ask you to support a public banking movement in Ireland, a bank able to provide credit for the rebuilding of our indigenous industries (and I’m not talking mad eclectic trad, I’m talking basics like fertilizing the land with seawater and seaweed – (not mechanically harvested seaweed either…but that’s for another day) and food security.

More information on public banking on my financial membership page here

A good summary of what is going on behind the amateur dramatic scenes of Trump and the fear-mongering tragedy of the virus and lockdowns!

The Tragedy Vaccine of Auto Immune Attack

On Pfizer's own website it says that the vaccine has not been trialled on the elderly or any pregnant women and yet Ireland's government has promoted these two groups as the first who should receive the vaccine. Pfizer also advise that each person should consider their own medical history and the occurrence of auto immune problems, where the body attacks itself. What happens is an immune system storm, made unstoppable as those who have received the vaccine have attached this response to the generation of every future cell. That means that people won't be able to fight any future infection. There have been NO STAGE FOUR TRIALS STARTED OR COMPLETED.

It's hard to tell your parents that all their friends will be dead within 6 months but it's harder still when a parent is determined to have the 'vaccine'. In the same way I refused to help an Old Leighlin farmer round up lambs for slaughter, I will not drive my old Mum to the surgery. Whether she's signing her own death warrant or not. She wants to go it alone. I wonder if one of the other siblings should do it who have been pressurising her to have it. Who is right, we shall see. More importantly, will be still be a close knit family. Do your research before you do anything else or tell anyone else what to do.

❗️Recent Pfizer Covid19 vaccine data⬇️

FROM THE CDC;  3,150 people vaccinated in ONE DAY are "unable to perform normal daily activities, unable to work" after vaccination.

This is a massive 2.7% of people who can no longer work after having the Pfizer vaccine.
